For NZ Beef Farmers
If you’re running beef cattle in New Zealand, you already know that liveweight is one of the most important numbers on your farm. It tells you if your mob is on track for finishing weights, whether your weaners are thriving, if that lean patch in the back paddock is actually costing you money, and whether you’ve got animals that need attention before they fall behind.
However, getting accurate, regular liveweight data has been slow, expensive and counter-productive. This is where 3D vision technology Scanabull changes the game.

The Current Options (And Why None of Them Are Great)
Option 1: The Crush and Weigh Scales
This is the gold standard for accuracy – but it comes at a cost – to capital, infrastructure, labour, and the animals.

It’s time-consuming. It’s labour-intensive. And it’s stressful for you and the cattle. Yarding stress can cause cattle to lose 2-5% of their liveweight in shrink – that’s 10-25kg on a 500kg animal, which can throw off your data and your finishing decisions. Add in bruising, the odd busted gate, connectivity issues, and a half-day’s work, and it’s clear why many farmers avoid weighing as often as they should. And if you’re running cattle on multiple blocks or in back country where you don’t have a good set of yards, forget it. It’s just not practical.
Option 2: Weigh Bands or Tape
Cheap, portable, and occasionally better than nothing. But let’s be honest – they’re guesswork dressed up as data. Frame size, body condition, and breed type all throw the estimates off. Industry studies suggest weigh bands can be out by 20-50kg depending on the animal. Not many people will be risking putting their arms through the rails and around big unpredictable animals one by one for a guestimate.
Option 3: Walk-Over Weigh Systems
Automated and helpful when data is averaged over a week – if you have the budget and the setup. A walk-over weigh is a serious piece of kit, and it works beautifully in a well-designed raceway with high, regular throughput.
But for pasture-based operations? It’s impractical. The infrastructure cost, the installation, the need for cattle to walk over it consistently – it’s just not realistic for grazing systems, finishing blocks, run-offs, or farms without permanent yards.
Option 4: Eyeballing It
You’re a good stockperson. You know your cattle. You can tell when an animal is doing well or struggling. But you can’t eyeball a drafting decision when you’re trying to hit a processor spec window, and you can’t sell “looks about right” to a buyer. Most farmers freely admit their eye is inaccurate and of course it is – farmers are busy enough – training a weight eye takes years of regular long-term calibration against objective weights and because that data is so difficult to obtain, there is nothing to train the eye.
So Why Does Liveweight Matter So Much?
Because almost every commercial decision you make on a beef farm comes back to weight.
Finishing and Processing Decisions
Processors want cattle within their spec windows. Send them too light, and you might miss the carcass grade you’re after. Send them too heavy, and you could be leaving margin on the table. Knowing where your mob is sitting means you can draft with confidence, not guesswork.
Animal Health and Performance
An animal that’s falling behind the mob often shows it in weight before it shows anywhere else. Regular liveweight data picks up issues early – whether it’s worms, virus, or just not thriving on the current feed. Research shows that animals with subclinical worm burdens can lose 20-30% of their potential growth rate – weight data can pick this up weeks before it’s visible to the eye. The earlier you catch it, the cheaper it is to fix.

Feed Budgeting and Pasture Management
Liveweight gain tells you whether your pasture, supplements, or winter crops are doing their job. If you’re targeting 0.8kg average daily gain (ADG) on finishing cattle but only getting 0.5kg, that’s potentially an extra month to slaughter and lost margin on every animal. Regular weight data means you can adjust feed strategies before you’ve wasted weeks of potential growth.
Trading and Buying Confidence
Whether you’re selling weaners, buying in stores, or negotiating on deadweight, having accurate liveweight data builds trust and transparency. It’s the difference between a handshake deal based on estimates and a trade backed by numbers.
Breeding and Genetics Feedback
If you’re retaining heifers or tracking sire performance, weight data over time tells you which genetics are actually performing in your system. It’s not just about birthweight or weaning weight – it’s about how they grow out on your farm, on your pasture and between seasons.
What If Weighing Didn’t Have to Be This Hard?
That’s where Scanabull comes in.

We’re making it easier to get the liveweight data you need, without all the downsides.
How it works:
Scanabull uses 3D vision technology on your iPhone Pro to measure cattle liveweight – no crush, no lifting, no yard setup required. Walk through the pen or the race, scan the mob, and you’ve got weights in seconds. The data syncs to WeighIQ, your secure dashboard, where you can track growth rates, set targets, and share data with your stock agent, vet, or processor if you choose to.
Why it’s built for NZ pasture-based beef farms:
- No infrastructure required – works in any yard, pen, or raceway you’ve already got. No flat concrete pad, no expensive install.
- Low-stress for cattle – minimal handling, minimal mustering, no bruising, injury or weight loss from the process itself.
- Fast and flexible – weigh a mob in minutes, not half a day. Use it on the home block, the run-off, or the back country block where you’d never justify putting in a set of scales.
- Accurate enough to make decisions – we’re building this to give you confidence in finishing calls, health monitoring, and trade transparency. Not guesswork. Not “close enough.”
The Bottom Line

Liveweight is one of the most valuable numbers on your farm. But getting it shouldn’t mean losing half a day, stressing your cattle, or settling for guesswork.
Scanabull is being built to give you the weight data you need – when you need it, where you need it, without the hassle.
If that sounds like something your operation could use, we’d love to hear from you.
