How 3D imagery, AI technology weigh large animals

A Waikato-founded agri-tech startup, Scanabull, is transforming livestock management with 3D imaging and AI, allowing farmers to predict animal weights without traditional scales.

Founded by Dan Bull, who combines farming experience with a Master’s in Machine Learning, Scanabull leverages iPhone 3D cameras and custom algorithms to quickly and accurately weigh animals on the farm. The technology supports farmers, meat processors, and the environment, reducing animal stress, yard time, and methane emissions.

This self-funded venture is using New Zealand as a test bed, with plans to expand to Australia, the United States, Canada, and Europe. Scanabull soft-launched earlier this year, with a big commercial launch alongside its business partners at Fieldays in June 2026.
